We want our City to be a place for everyone. This means a community where all people can join in, feel welcome, and live well.
What is the plan about?
This plan explains what the City of Port Phillip Council will do to make life easier for people with disability.
It aims to make our City fairer, inclusive, and accessible for everyone.
Why do we need this plan?
More people in Australia are living with disability.
People with disability still face unfair treatment and barriers every day.
Council wants to remove these barriers and make things fairer.
What will Council do?
The plan has 4 main goals:
- Make services and places easier to use, like our buildings, beaches, libraries and markets
- Help people get and keep jobs by promoting fair practices and providing workplace adjustments
- Include people in community life by offering accessible events and programs
- Improve attitudes and stop unfair treatment by providing training and holding community forums
How will we know the plan is working?
We will monitor the delivery of the plan closely and give updates to the community every year on how we are doing. We will regularly ask people with disability their views on the plan.
What happens next?
Council will check progress every year.
We will report to the Victorian Human Rights Commission and the community.
What's happened so far
This draft Accessibility Action Plan was shaped using local information and community voices.
- We analysed local statistics and data to understand barriers and opportunities for people with disability in our City.
- We reviewed previous plans and feedback from earlier engagement.
- We held a workshop with Voices of the South Side (VOSS), a group of residents with lived experience of disability, to understand their ideas and priorities, with participants sharing their views on how to make our City more accessible. Some of these included ways to make retail outlets more accessible, improve public transport and change community attitudes towards people with disability. These are reflected in the draft Accessibility Plan.
Your feedback now will help us make sure the final Plan reflects what matters most to our community.
