Council recognises the shifting local and international demographic trends towards an older, more urbanised population.

Currently, 10% of the residents of Port Phillip are over the age of 65 and this is forecast to increase to 12% over the next 25 years – a 56% increase in number of people (9,918 to 15,486).

In order to plan for and develop a city that is age-friendly and supports active ageing, we are updating our ‘Ageing in Port Phillip Strategy 2006 – 2016’ with an ‘Age Friendly Cities’ approach.

This approach utilises the World Health Organisation (WHO) Age Friendly Cities Guide. The WHO Age-friendly Cities Programme is an international effort to create the types of cities that lead to active and healthy ageing.

Council is consulting to gain an understanding of the successes and challenges our community faces against the eight key themes of the WHO Age Friendly Cities Guide

The 8 key features of an Age Friendly City are:

   1.      Outdoor Spaces and Buildings

   2.      Transportation

   3.      Housing

   4.      Social Participation

   5.      Respect and Social Inclusion

   6.      Civic Participation and Employment

   7.      Communication and Information

   8.      Community and Health Services
