We're updating our Community Engagement Policy

Our current Community Engagement Policy is nearly at the end of its term, so we’re using this opportunity to make the new version even better.

What’s happened so far

In November and December 2024, we asked our community how we could make it easier for you to share your views and take part in Council’s decision-making.

We heard from 290 people. You told us we should focus on:

  • Clearer and more timely communication
  • Offering different ways to get involved
  • Removing barriers that make engagement harder
  • Building trust and being more accountable
  • Reaching out more through networks, events and community groups.

Read the Community Engagement Report.

Since November 2024, we’ve been working behind the scenes to improve the Policy. This has included:

  • Comparing ourselves with other councils
  • Researching best practice and industry standards
  • Running workshops with councillors to make sure the Policy aligns with Council’s goals
  • Talking with staff across the organisation about what will work best in practice.

Our Community Engagement Framework

Based on what you told us and the research we’ve done, we’ve developed a new draft Community Engagement Framework. The framework includes:

  • Community Engagement Policy – our commitment to engagement under the Local Government Act 2020
  • Port Phillip in Partnership: Our Commitment to Community Engagement – a new plan for engagement, showing what we'll focus on and improve over the next four years
  • Community Engagement Guidelines – a practical guide for staff, with templates and tools to make sure engagement is consistent and effective
  • Our Community Engagement Model – the different methods we use to connect with the community, such as:
    • Online engagement options
    • Place-based activities in neighbourhoods
    • Working with advisory committees to hear from different community groups
    • A community engagement newsletter
    • Tailored engagement activities for specific needs.

Help shape our approach

We're now seeking your feedback to make sure we've got it right. Share your thoughts on the draft Community Engagement Policy and draft Commitment.
