Local Government elected representatives are entitled to receive an allowance to assist them in their performing their roles of Mayor or Councillor in representing and advocating for their community.

The payment of a Mayoral allowance and Councillor allowances are governed by the Local Government Act 1989 and Local Government Act 2020.

As part of the changes to the Local Government Act 2020, responsibility for determining Mayoral, Deputy Mayoral and Councillor allowances transfer from each council to the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal. The Tribunal is expected to make its first determination in late 2021. In the meantime, Council is undertaking its own review and recommending no adjustment be made to the Mayoral and Councillor allowances.
