In 2024 we engaged with traders and the community to help us develop the new Footpath Trading Guidelines, endorsed by Council at its meeting of 7 August 2024.

The Footpath Trading Guidelines provide a framework for the sustainable use and management of footpath trading areas. We updated the guidelines so they meet current standards and to make things clearer for everyone.

Following on from this, we have drafted a new Footpath Trading Fee Policy and are encouraging traders to have their say on the new draft Policy.

The draft Policy offers an improved customer experience:

  • A simplified fee structure that is easier understand.
  • A charge per square metre, instead of the current method which is by quantities of furniture (e.g. tables, chairs, etc).
  • 2 rates of charge: Standard Rate for the main precincts, and a discount Rate for other areas.
  • Reduced fees for many traders, supporting and incentivising businesses to set up, remain and thrive in our city.
  • Allows businesses to self-quote.

Engagement is open from 11 August to 21 September 2025. We encourage you to have your say to help shape the draft Footpath Trading Policy.
