The official name for our new kindergarten in the Ferrars Street Education and Community Precinct is Barring Djinang Kindergarten.
The new long day care kindergarten for children aged three years and above opened in late January 2018 on the fifth floor of the new primary school building at 129 Ferrars Street, Southbank.
We recently undertook a process to formally name the kindergarten. One of the key actions in Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) (2017-2019) is to involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the naming of Fishermans Bend roads, parks and buildings in the Boon Wurrung language.
The Boon Wurrung Foundation provided four great name options for the kindergarten from the first people’s language, an ancient oral tradition and now a written language.
The period for feedback has now concluded and Barring Djinang which means 'little footsteps', has now been chosen as the new name of the kindergarten.
