Road Naming, Place Naming and Feature Naming

City of Port Phillip is responsible for assigning and changing the names of roads, streets and laneways and allocating new addresses to properties within the municipality. It is Council's intention to name all unnamed lanes and places within the municipality.

Naming of any place (in accordance with the Naming Rules for places in Victoria) enables the place to be clearly identified, which means its precise location can be determined. The uniqueness and accuracy of a place name reduces the likelihood of delaying an emergency services vehicle due to inadequate or confusing location details, which might have life threatening consequences. Proper naming also assists with service delivery by other agencies and companies.

The naming or renaming process provides the Community with the opportunity to recognise the local history, culture and identity of the area. It also enables us to clearly identify and locate our places, features, localities and roads across City of Port Phillip.

Council is the Delegated Naming Authority under the Naming Rules for places in Victoria.

Any person, organisation, community group or naming authority (such as Council, government agency or developer), may request to name or rename roads, reserves, open spaces and other Council facilities.
