A bit about the project

Background:

A new park is being developed at 14 Lansdowne Road, St Kilda East and will be named Ngalambunh (NGUH-lum-boon) meaning ‘resting, sitting, living’.

Reasons for Naming:

  • To formally name the new unnamed park
  • To ensure clear, logical, and unambiguous addressing for future residents, visitors, service providers, and emergency services.
  • To align with the Australian/New Zealand Addressing Standard (AS/NZS 4819) and the Naming Rules for Victoria 2022 under the Geographic Place Names Act 1998

Proposed Name:

This name has been chosen to reflect the purpose of the park as a place where the local community can come together to relax. Ngalambunh means both ‘sit/rest’ and also ‘live’, reflecting also the intention that this be a place where the local community can feel at home – a place where one can find connection to Country and community in the bustle of the suburbs.

Council has worked closely with BLCAC to find a suitable name for this new park. This confirmation of approved language use comes with the explicit consent of the Bunurong Community as represented by Bunurong Elders and Knowledge Holders. The accuracy of the word above, including its meaning, spelling, and pronunciation, has been confirmed by rigorous research and peer review.

Ngalambunh is the standard, official Bunurong spelling of this word. Any deviation from this spelling is incorrect and is not endorsed by BLCAC or the broader Bunurong community.

The naming rules provide the opportunity to object directly to the naming authority and appeal to the Registrar of Geographic Names if you do not support this naming. In accordance, affected community members may lodge an appeal with Geographic Names Victoria.
