Project background

The City of Port Phillip’s foreshore is a special and well‑known part of our area. Many people feel connected to it, and it’s an important part of our lifestyle. It’s enjoyed by both locals and visitors, and it also provides important natural spaces for coastal plants and animals.

But things are changing. Our environment is facing more extreme weather, and our population is growing. This puts more pressure on our beaches and coastal parks. To prepare for the future, the City of Port Phillip has updated its Draft Foreshore Management Plan (FMP) as part of Our Coastal Future.

What did we ask?

During consultation, we asked the community to share their feedback on the Draft Foreshore Management Plan. This included:

  • the proposed vision for our coastline
  • the key goals and priorities
  • the actions to guide foreshore management over the next 10 years

We also asked what matters most to you, including:

  • the key issues affecting the foreshore
  • improvements that would help you use and enjoy coastal areas
  • how the plan should be delivered in practice

Who did we hear from?

What did we hear?

Across all engagement activities, participants highlighted the following priorities:

  • Maintaining and upgrading foreshore infrastructure, improving water quality, protecting and enhancing the natural environment and open space, addressing climate change and sea-level rise, and managing anti-social behaviour and vehicle use along the foreshore.

You can learn more about what we heard in the engagement report below.

What happens next?

Once endorsed by Council and the State Minister for Environment, the new Foreshore Management Plan will replace the current plan and guide the sustainable management of Port Phillip’s coastal and marine areas, including beaches, parks, infrastructure and community facilities, over the next 10 years.

Council will report annually to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) on progress, outlining activities delivered in line with the State’s Coastal and Marine Strategy and Council’s FMP Implementation Plan.
