The upgrades were shaped by community feedback gathered in two phases of consultation.

1. Oval surface upgrade

From October 2017 to April 2018 we will:

  • replace the oval surface following the 2017 football season.
  • fence off the oval and there can be no use of the ground during the surface upgrade.

We understand dog owners need an off-leash area for their pets to run and play and there are several nearby alternatives while the oval is inaccessible:

  • Marina Point Reserve, 29 Marine Parade, St Kilda
  • the beach between Marina Reserve and Brooks Jetty
  • M.O. Moran Reserve, at 65 Marine Parade, Elwood

Other dog walking areas can be found at www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/dog_parks_reserves.htm

2. Sports Pavilion upgrade

Construction period from April 2018 to April 2019

In partnership with the Victorian Government the pavilion will be renovated and upgraded. This will include:

  • new change rooms and unisex shower and toilet facilities
  • new unisex umpire rooms
  • new kitchen
  • upgraded and larger community space
  • upgraded exterior paths around the pavilion to improve access for wheelchair users and the visually impaired
  • wheelchair accessible BBQs to be installed next to the existing building.

3. Netball and basketball court upgrade

From April 2018 to April 2019 we will:

  • increase the size of the courts and install a plexipave surface so they can be used for competitions.
  • investigate the installation of LED lights so the courts can be used for training in the evening.

4. Irrigation and soil management

From April to July 2018 we will:

  • install new irrigation throughout the reserve to allow a fully grassed surface to be established.

5. Pathway lighting

From May to September 2018 we will:

  • install lighting on the pathway next to the Veg Out Community Gardens, between Spenser Street and Chaucer Street. This is in response to community requests.

6. Trees and vegetation

An arborist investigation has confirmed that it will be necessary to remove 13 trees and other low level vegetation around the pavilion. These have been assessed to be in poor condition, in locations

that are not suitable for their health or growth and likely to cause damage to the pavilion. We will plant more trees to replace those that are removed and make sure they are in appropriate locations.

Removing the trees and vegetation will also mean we can:

  • establish pathways suitable for those with limited mobility or impaired vision
  • improve connections to the upgraded netball courts
  • improve safety and visibility
  • improve the look of the reserve with new landscaping
