Project Connect is a long-term investment in South Melbourne Market, delivering accessibility, infrastructure and public space improvements while protecting the Market’s role as a working market and being a loved and trusted community destination.

In the coming years, the Market will be delivering a range of changes to the building and surrounding streets to make it safer and more accessible and improve the visitor experience.

The changes will include:

• more toilet facilities
• better footpaths and aisle surface grading
• improving accessibility to the rooftop carpark
• improving and increasing public space outside the Market
• a new retail precinct on York Street.

Community feedback has played a vital role in shaping Project Connect since consultation began in 2019.

In Stage 1 (2023), we connected with our community to hear how you use the Market, how the proposed changes will impact you, and how you think we can improve public space around the Market.

In Stage 2, we’re now seeking input on:

• the draft concept designs for York and Coventry Streets.
• the new York Street retail precinct, including retail offerings and trading hours
• public space, seating, greenery and community activation opportunities.
