We’ve heard from our community that creating a greener, more resilient city is important. In response, Council developed the Urban Forest Strategy, which outlines a long-term plan to grow more trees, support wildlife, and increase green space across Port Phillip.

As part of this strategy, the Urban Forest Precinct Plan for Balaclava and St Kilda East identifies Alexandra Street as a key location for greening. Alexandra Street is a wide, two-way street with angled parking on the west side and homes on the east—making it a great opportunity to boost tree cover and connect habitats.

The project has two main ideas:

  • A green corridor beside St Kilda Cemetery – planting new trees and plants to provide shade, help wildlife, and reach 40% tree cover.
  • More street trees south of Alma Road – adding trees along the street to increase canopy cover and make the area nicer.
To enable the green corridor, some angled parking on the west side of Alexandra Street may be removed. Parking surveys show these bays are not used much, and community feedback will help guide the final design.

Help shape your urban forest.

We are seeking your feedback on the proposed green corridor and tree planting along Alexandra Street. Your input will help guide the design and delivery of this project, which supports the goals of the Urban Forest Strategy—to reduce heat, improve biodiversity, and create greener, cooler, and more liveable neighbourhoods.
