We’ve heard from our community that creating a greener, more resilient city is important. In response, Council developed the Urban Forest Strategy, which outlines a long-term plan to grow more trees, support wildlife, and increase green space across Port Phillip.

As part of this strategy, the Urban Forest Precinct Plan for Balaclava and St Kilda East identifies Alexandra Street as a key location for greening. Alexandra Street is a wide, two-way street with angled parking on the west side and homes on the east—making it a great opportunity to boost tree cover and connect habitats.

Draft Concept Design

A draft concept design has now been developed for the Alexandra Street Green Corridor, informed by community feedback received during the first stage of engagement and supported by technical assessments. The concept focuses on two key areas:

  • A green corridor beside St Kilda Cemetery — establishing new trees and vegetation to provide shade, support biodiversity and work towards a 40% tree canopy target.
  • Additional street trees south of Alma Road — increasing canopy cover and greening to improve neighbourhood amenity along the street.

To enable the green corridor, some angled parking on the west side of Alexandra Street has been proposed for removal, allowing space for trees and landscaping. Parking occupancy surveys show there is sufficient parking supply in the area, and this approach reflects strong community support expressed during the first stage of engagement.

Help shape your urban forest.

We are now seeking community feedback on the draft concept design for the Alexandra Street Green Corridor. Your feedback will help refine the design before it progresses to detailed design and delivery. This project supports the goals of the Urban Forest Strategy by helping to reduce urban heat, improve biodiversity, and create greener, cooler and more liveable neighbourhoods.
