Project Background
We’re looking at ways to give local businesses more opportunities during the Grand Prix. We’re planning a trial to extend the length of road that is closed on Armstrong Street for the four days of the event.
Currently, Armstrong Street is closed from Canterbury Road to Canterbury Place, and we are looking to extend the closure from Canterbury Place to Richardson Street. The initiative is designed to support local businesses and create a vibrant atmosphere with more space for locally led activations during the event period.
This idea builds on Middle Park Hotel’s annual activation and opens the door for more local businesses to get involved. With Council investing in the extended road closure including waste services and amenities such as portable toilets, this trial offers an opportunity for businesses to extend their trading and connect with community and visitors in a new way.
We’re now seeking feedback to help ensure this extended closure is as seamless as possible.

What's being considered:
- Extending road closure from Canterbury Place to Richardson Street for the four days of the Grand Prix
- Council-funded support including additional road closure, traffic management, waste collection and portable toilets
- A one-year trial with a review after the event
What can be influenced?
- Ideas to make access easier for residents and businesses.
- Suggestions to help local businesses benefit.
What is already decided:
- Closing Armstrong Street at Canterbury Road (this happens as part of the Grand Prix every year)
- Closing Armstrong Street from Canterbury Road to Canterbury Place
- Grand Prix dates, events, and main road closures etc.
- Middle Park Hotel activation. Other traders may choose to participate in their own way with level of involvement being determined by each business.
- Council spending for road closures, bins and toilets
