We're upgrading the community pitch to a synthetic surface and installing new sports lighting to support the current and future use of the reserve.
City of Port Phillip is committed to supporting our local community members to live active lives through greater access to sport and recreation opportunities. We are seeing more people using our local sports facilities, especially in junior and women’s sport.
The JL Murphy sportsgrounds are a popular venue for local residents and sports clubs including cricket, soccer and AFL baseball and football.
We are subsequently upgrading the community pitch to a synthetic surface to provide a consistent and safe playing surface and support the health and wellbeing of our local community, in addition to upgrading the existing sports lighting for this pitch to comply with Australian Standards.
Project update August 2022: Due to unforeseen issues with underground infrastructure, the timelines for this project have been extended. We are currently reviewing feedback from the community to inform the development of concept plans which will be available for comment in early 2023. Upgrading the pitch
The pitch upgrade will provide a safe and consistent playing surface to allow for greater durability, without the wear and tear currently experienced on the pitch.
The upgrade from natural turf to synthetic will allow for increased usage of the pitch to accommodate current sports use and future participation levels.
Replacing the existing sports lighting
The upgrade will see the replacement of the existing sports lighting to comply with Australian Standards. The new sports lighting will allow for lighting to be focused directly on the sportsground area, reducing light spill to surrounding areas.
Greater sustainability and energy benefits
The synthetic surface is not impacted by heavy rain fall or drought, and will require a lower amount of water to maintain the pitch.
The lighting upgrade will utilise high-performance LED lighting technology, which will lower power consumption, eliminate upward light, and increase lamp life, reducing maintenance.
