Project background

We’re developing a master plan for the nine reserves along the Port Melbourne Light Rail Corridor.

In 2025 we asked our community how they use these spaces and what could be improved. The feedback we heard helped us develop a draft master plan. The draft included ideas to improve access through the reserves, add more greenery and create more places for people to relax and spend time together.

We shared the draft with the community between May and June 2026 and invited further feedback. On this page you can read what we heard in response to the draft.

What did we ask?

We asked community members:

  • how they felt about the draft master plan
  • what they liked about it
  • what they would like to see added or improved
  • what they would like to see in a proposed upgrade to the play space in Walter Reserve
  • what features or activities they thought would appeal to young people in a proposed new teen space in Walter Reserve
  • what would make proposed new gathering spaces more appealing
  • what kinds of settings would encourage them to spend more time in the reserves.

At the Port Melbourne Community Forum we invited people to share their thoughts on specific features or locations in the draft master plan.

To help us understand who we were hearing from, we also asked people about their connection to the reserves, how often they visit and what they do there.

Who did we hear from?

What did we hear?

We heard a wide range of views about the draft master plan. The feedback highlighted strong community interest in the future of the reserves and provided valuable guidance about what people value and where further consideration is needed.

Views differed on some elements of the draft, particularly where people felt proposed facilities or changes could affect existing uses of the reserves, including dog off-leash activities.

There was broad interest in more trees, shade and native planting, as well as improved paths and crossings, upgraded play spaces, better seating, drinking fountains and places for people to meet and relax.

People also told us that it is important to protect the existing character, open space and calm atmosphere of the reserves. Key areas raised for further consideration included dog amenities and management, the design of paths and crossings, proposed gathering spaces and the relocation of the bocce courts.

Feedback on the proposed Walter Reserve play space showed support for nature-based play, climbing opportunities, swings, shade and activities for children of different ages and abilities. We also heard a range of views about the proposed teen space, including ideas for creating a safe and welcoming place for young people to socialise and be active.

We are considering this feedback as we update the master plan.

What happens next?

We're now considering the feedback we received and updating the master plan. The updated plan is scheduled to be presented for formal adoption at the 18 November 2026 Council meeting.
