The City of Port Phillip is undertaking statutory procedures to name unnamed Laneway R3615 as ‘Jonesy Lane’, commemorating local Australian artist Spencer P Jones who lived and worked in St Kilda for most of his career.

This naming is required to provide sufficient identification for visitors and emergency services. Renaming this lane won’t change your usage of the area or it’s access, but it will assist emergency services to save critical minutes when locating incidents and improve access for visitors and other essential services.

Spencer P Jones lived on Jackson St, St Kilda and played locally at venues including the Prince of Wales Hotel and the ESPY. The Violent Femmes recently covered a Spencer song at their show at the Palais.

‘Jonesy’ as he was best known, played guitar with acts including The Johnnys, Beasts of Bourbon, Paul Kelly and The Coloured Girls, Chris Bailey and The General Dog, Maurice Frawley and The Working Class Ringos, Renee Geyer and Sacred Cowboys. He also released ten highly regarded albums as a solo artist. In May 2012 Australian Guitar magazine rated Spencer P Jones as one of Australia's Top 40 best guitarists.

A public funeral for Spencer P. Jones was held on 31 August 2018 at St Mary’s Church, St Kilda East.

The proposed name ‘Jonesy Lane’ has been assessed against The Naming rules for places in Victoria 2022 and meets all criteria.
