Aerial image of Nelson St, St Kilda

This proposal is to update the current street name “Nelson St” to “Nelson St West” and install new street signage.

The current “Nelson Street, St Kilda” address is a legacy from the municipal boundary change in 1994. Prior to this, “Nelson Street” sat within the City of Prahran (now City of Stonnington).

Why are we proposing this name change?

  • To prevent confusion due to duplicated street names within a close proximity. Currently there are four streets named “Nelson” within the City of Port Phillip and within a 5kms radius of each other. Two of these streets have the exact same name “Nelson Street”; one located in St Kilda and the other in Balaclava.
  • To match the address with Council’s rates database and rates notices.
  • To enable accurate location information for emergency services and visitors.
