Council’s Public Toilet Plan 2023-2033 sets out how we will improve the quality, safety and accessibility of our City’s public toilets. As part of the plan, we’re upgrading the public toilet facility at Port Melbourne Beach, adjacent to the Port Melbourne Life Saving Club.

This public toilet is an aging facility that no longer meets current standards for accessibility, capacity, or compliance. While there are male and female toilets, accessible cubicles and changerooms, the lack of ambulant toilets, all-gender options and a Changing Place means the amenities are not suitable for everyone.

Our upgrade will deliver a fully compliant facility that incorporates accessible, ambulant and all-gender amenities; upgraded changerooms; a Changing Places facility and a comprehensive uplift in condition and design quality. The upgrade will also provide baby change amenities, sharps disposal and sanitary bins.

Some community members have asked us to install hot showers at the toilet facility. We’ve listened, and we are looking into whether hot showers are possible and sustainable. Because this work is still happening, we are not asking for more feedback about hot showers right now.

We understand that the mural on the current toilet facility is an important part of the local landscape. The sea-themed mural was commissioned in 2019 by Melbourne based street artist Conrad Bizjak. While it can’t be retained as part of the upgrade, we want to make sure our community has a say in what replaces it.

We’re asking community members to share their feedback on how the new toilet facility should look, including any artwork. Your feedback will help us design a new facility that will be appreciated and wellused by the local community.

In addition to your feedback, we’ll be guided by Council’s Public Toilet Plan 2023-2033, the Foreshore Management Plan and DEECA’s coastal design guidelines.

Once completed, the project will provide an inclusive, modern and functional public amenity that supports people being active, helps community wellbeing and meets the needs of a wide range of users.
