We are developing a strategy to guide how sport and active recreation is supported across the City of Port Phillip. Feedback from the first phase of engagement, along with research and data, has helped shape the draft Strategy. We are now asking for your input to check if we’re on the right track and if we’ve missed anything.
Take a look at the draft Sport and Active Recreation Strategy and let us know what you think before Sunday 28 June 2026. Your feedback will help make sure Port Phillip is a place where everyone can be physically active and enjoy sport and active recreation.

Your feedback will influence:
- The overarching vision for the Strategy – what we are trying to achieve.
- The key ideas under the three focus areas: Places, Participation and Partnerships including what we value and want to prioritise.
- The actions under each focus area, the steps we’ll take over the next 10 years to achieve the vision.
We asked for your feedback
We spoke with over 1,200 people across the community, including residents, sport and recreation clubs, schools and activity providers. We wanted to understand:
- What helps people be active
- What makes it hard
- What changes would make the biggest difference
This feedback helped shape the Strategy and the actions Council will focus on over the next 10 years.
You told us:
🏗️ 1. We need more and better facilities, with improved safety and maintenance.
What’s in the draft Strategy:
- Upgrading existing facilities including sports grounds, courts, lighting, fitness stations and club rooms
- Building new facilities where there are gaps, including outdoor netball courts and infrastructure in Fishermans Bend
- Advocating for better walking and cycling connections to activity spaces
💲 2. Cost and inclusion are major barriers to being active.
What we’re doing:
- Promoting low-cost and free ways to be active (including walking, running, cycling, swimming)
- Promoting programs for groups facing extra barriers to being active
- Encouraging more flexible participation options (shorter formats, casual and social play)
ℹ️ 3. People don’t know what’s available to them.
What we’re doing:
- Improving how we promote activities and opportunities
- Making it easier to find information online
- Increasing awareness across all parts of the community
🏀 4. Clubs and providers are struggling with costs, volunteers and access to facilities.
What we’re doing:
- Delivering a club and provider development program
- Supporting clubs to be more inclusive and sustainable
- Helping clubs access funding and grants
- Advocating for access to non-council managed facilities
👥 5. Facilities are full, hard to book, or not used efficiently.
What we’re doing:
- Improving scheduling and shared use of facilities
- Increasing capacity through lighting upgrades and surface improvements
- Activating spaces at different times (daytime, off-peak, winter)
- Expanding access to non-Council facilities (schools, private venues)
