About this project

There are so many ways to be active in Port Phillip! There are walking and cycling paths, parks, playgrounds, the Foreshore and beach, skateparks, leisure centres, gyms as well as a wide range of formal sports to participate in.

Our local sport and active recreation facilities, infrastructure and programs are guided by a 10-year strategy. The current strategy is coming to an end and we are developing a new one and we want your input to help shape it!

As we look ahead, it is important to find ways for our community to be active and stay active, whether through formal sport or other physical activities.

To develop our new strategy, we will consider research and data, Council plans and strategies, and the trends and challenges in sport and active recreation today.

Trends and challenges

In the last ten years there has been a large increase in demand for sport and active recreation facilities and use of open spaces due to:

  • Population growth and increasing high density living
  • More people wanting to play formal sport, in particular women and girls.
  • The impact of COVID-19, which included more people being active in their local neighbourhoods.
  • A growing interest in new sports such as pickleball and padel, and modified versions of traditional sports, such as AFL9’s, Netball Fast 5, Cricket T20 and Rugby Sevens.

Because of this demand, many of our sport and active recreation facilities are full or nearly full. Plus, there is not much open space in Port Phillip to build new facilities. To tackle these challenges, we need to plan how our sport and active recreation facilities and spaces can serve more people and more activities effectively.

We want your input! Your feedback will shape a draft Sport and Active Recreation Strategy. We will share this draft in 2026 for another round of feedback before finalising it.
