The State Government provided funding of $200k to investigate improvements to the Wellington Street precinct in the 15/16 State Budget. In line with this commitment Council has designated the allocation of these funds in Wellington Street as a Tier 2 priority for 15/16.

During 2015 Council has developed options to improve the streetscape making use of the $200k in funding. These proposals are consistent with issues identified in the Draft St Kilda Road South Urban Design and Land Use Framework to improve the streetscape and enhance the local ‘village’ character of the area.

The improvements to Wellington Street aim to address traffic speed, safety and functionality and improve the amenity of the streetscape.

Council is planning to utilise the $200K funding to:

  • Engage with the community on design concepts
  • Develop a detailed design for improvements along the entire street
  • Upgrade the Upton Road intersection as the first phase of capital works by April 2016. This is consistent with earlier feedback from the community that this is a key priority.

Future capital works phases will take place over subsequent years subject to Council funding.
