We are inviting community feedback to help us design a new recreation space under the Graham Street overpass in Port Melbourne.

Now that upgrades to the nearby skate park have been completed, we are looking at how the space on the other side of the light rail could be used in the future. This area currently comprises an unused gravel space and small car park, but it also has the potential to become a place where people can be active, meet friends and enjoy time outdoors.

We are exploring ideas for a flexible, hard‑surface recreation space. This could include things like a multipurpose court for games, casual play areas, and places to sit and watch or rest. Community feedback will help shape the design so the space works well for people who live, work and spend time nearby.

Project background

The Graham Street recreation space project is part of a longer term plan to improve local open spaces and support healthy, active communities.

Council has been planning in several stages to transform the area under the Graham Street overpass into a multi-use recreation space. This plan set out several stages to improve recreation opportunities under and around the overpass. The skate park upgrade was completed in 2025 as the first stage. This project focuses on the next stage, which looks at improving and activating the space next to Evans Street under the overpass.

The area has some important limitations. There are underground services and structural constraints, such as the columns supporting the overpass, which mean grassed areas and deep landscaping are not possible. Any future use needs to work as a hard surface space, such as courts, play markings or social areas.

Council is now seeking the community views to help guide how we develop a recreation space under the Graham Street overpass. This includes hearing from people about how they would like to use the space in the future and how important different features are to them.

Your feedback will help inform the design of the space and guide future recommendations to Council, so the area can become a welcoming and well used place for everyday recreation.
