Planning for a growing city

The City of Port Phillip is home to almost 113,000 residents. Over the next 10 years, our population is expected to grow to almost 150,000 people.

This growth will bring around 37,000 additional travellers, increasing the number of trips to, from and within our city. More people will be walking on footpaths, driving on roads, riding bikes and using public transport. This will place more pressure on an already busy transport network.

Council has a responsibility to help ensure people can move around our city safely and reliably. This means making decisions that balance different transport needs. As road and public space are limited, improving one type of transport can sometimes affect another. Our Integrated Transport Strategy guides how these decisions are made.

Why are we updating the Integrated Transport Strategy?

The current Integrated Transport Strategy was adopted in 2018 and needs to be updated to reflect the significant changes that have happened since then.

These changes include new work and travel patterns following the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as major planning projects such as Fishermans Bend.

The community is also facing challenges such as rising housing costs, fuel prices and other cost-of-living pressures. At the same time, new technology is creating opportunities to improve how transport networks operate and how people travel.

Updating the Integrated Transport Strategy gives Council the opportunity to plan for these changes and create a transport network that meets the needs of our growing and changing community.

The strategy will be supported by a four-year action plan. Together, they will identify the actions, investments and priorities needed to achieve our transport vision for Port Phillip and help shape the future of transport in our city.
