Thank you to everyone who contributed to this consultation in March / April 2021.
The outcomes of the consultation are being collated into an Engagement Summary Report, which will be provided to Council’s Heritage consultant to analyse as part of their review of the potential heritage significance of the two hotels. The consultant will make recommendations to Council about whether the hotels should be included in the Heritage Overlay, and the findings of this review will be reported to Council in the third quarter of this year.
If you would like any more information regarding the outcomes of the consultation, or about the next steps in the process, please contact Council's Strategic Planning team via ASSIST on 03 9209 6777 or email heritage@portphillip.vic.gov.au
What do your local hotels mean to you?
We're investigating the social values of two hotels in Port Phillip - the Inkerman Hotel and the Dick Whittington Tavern - and we'd like you to help us better understand the nature of our local communities' attachment to these two hotels.
For over 180 years, hotels have facilitated an important social function in Port Phillip. As places where people gather, hotels can often contribute to a community's sense of place through collective interaction over time.
Scroll down to complete our surveys or share your stories and memories of these two hotels with us by 18 April 2021.
Why are we doing this?
Council's Heritage Program 2019-21 has included identifying and addressing missing heritage places, incorrect or outdated heritage gradings and other inconsistencies.
The first stage of the program identified social values as a major gap in Port Phillip's heritage reviews. As a result, recognition and assessment of social value has new been incorporated into the program.
A preliminary review of the HO7 heritage precinct, which includes parts of Elwood, St Kilda, Balaclava and Ripponlea, recommended further assessment to better understand the social values of the Inkerman Hotel and Dick Whittington Tavern.
