The Port Melbourne Light Rail Corridor is a one-kilometre linear park made up of nine reserves. These spaces are used for walking, cycling, relaxing and spending time with others.

As more people move into Port Melbourne and nearby areas like Fishermans Bend, these parks will become even more important. The masterplan sets out a long-term vision to help guide future improvements. The project is part of delivering on our open space strategy, ‘Places for People: Public Space Strategy 2022 – 2032’.

In 2025 we asked our community how they use these spaces and what could be improved. We heard from 386 people through an online survey, pop-up sessions and emails. People told us the reserves are well-used and valued, but there are opportunities to make them better. You can read our engagement report to find out more about what we heard.

Vision

The vision for the draft masterplan is:

"To preserve, enhance and encourage greater use and enjoyment of the Light Rail Corridor's natural, environmental and historic qualities and increase the diversity of uses offered in the parks for everyone to enjoy."

Four objectives

The draft masterplan focuses on four design objectives. It also aims to address the key things we heard from community members in the first phase of engagement.

To support these goals, the plan includes features such as:

  • new path connections and upgraded paths
  • Improved amenities such as seating, tables and barbecues
  • a teen space
  • new toilet facilities
  • future upgraded and expanded play space
  • more plantings and protections for existing trees.

These ideas are not final designs. They are early concepts that would be developed further over time. Any future projects will be subject to funding and will involve further investigations and more detailed planning and design, including additional community engagement on individual projects.

We are now in the second phase of community engagement on the masterplan. At this stage, we are asking you if the draft masterplan reflects what you want and if any changes are needed.

Your feedback will help shape the final masterplan and guide improvements to the Light Rail Corridor over time.
